.MGX Enters the World of Haute Couture
As a follow-up to her sensational summer show, Dutch designer Iris van Herpen, once again teamed up with architect Daniel Widrig and .MGX in the creation of some stunning 3D printed dresses, with hats courtesy of Stephen Jones and shoes from Rem Koolhaas’s "United Nude".

Unveiled during haute couture week in Paris, the dresses form part of Van Herpen’s Autumn-Winter 2011 collection, and marked her, and .MGX’s, debut on the Paris catwalks. As to her initial inspiration for bringing rapid prototyping into the world of high fashion and her choice of .MGX, Van Herpen told Sabrina Morrison from Fashionista, "… There is a lot of rapid prototyping going around, but .MGX by Materialise is really progressive in what they do. And my designs are not easy, so I needed a company that likes a challenge, and they definitely do!"

Materialise, The Melonia Shoe, and the Brit Insurance Design Awards
From February 16th until August 7th, the Design Museum in London will be holding an exhibit showcasing the works nominated for the Brit Insurance Design Awards 2011. These prestigious awards, considered "the Oscars of the design world", are given to the most forward thinking and innovative designs from around the world, spanning seven categories.
Within the fashion category are nominees Naim Josefi and Souzan Youssouf for the Melonia Shoe, a 3D printed shoe, produced by Materialise and unveiled on the fashion runways this past February.

3D printed in polyamide using Laser Sintering at Materialise’s headquarters in Belgium, the Melonia shoe is truly wearable art. Despite its delicate skeletal look, it is surprisingly strong, and as five models were able to prove on the runway, can be functional as well.
The shoe was designed to be a closed loop, in which a person can go to a shop, have their foot scanned, and have a shoe printed of homogenous, recyclable material. This pair of shoes can then be recycled to provide the material for a new pair when needed, the entire process embodying the concept of "no waste".
